Little Venice, an entrancing area of waterways and brightly coloured houseboats in west London, was named by resident poet Robert Browning, who liked nothing better than to gaze out over the scenic views as he waited for inspiration. Browning was referring specifically to the place where the Regent's Canal connects with the Paddington arm of the Grand Union Canal to form a pool with an island in the centre (now known as Browning's Pool and Browning's Island). These days, Little Venice describes the larger district of south Maida Vale, one of London's most desirable residential areas. Worlds away from the noise and fumes of the busy thoroughfares that surround it, Little Venice is a peaceful oasis where families can watch the swans and geese from the comfort of the Waterside Café, which is in a narrowboat, or take a leisurely cruise to London Zoo or Camden, past the handsome Georgian and Victorian terraces on the banks of the Regent's Canal. Business people might hire a conference barge for important meetings. The Puppet Theatre Barge, meanwhile, presents children's entertainment throughout the winter. Walkers enjoy the tranquil towpaths - and the delightful pubs and restaurants that await them back at Little Venice.
