Liverpool Street is one of London's busiest commuter areas, with its famous station serving 123 million visitors a year. The mainline terminus, connecting to destinations in East Anglia and Essex, including Stansted Airport, links to the underground in a building whose major 1980s redevelopment retained much of its original grand design. The station provides for all the amenities demanded by today's traveller, and more improvements are on the way. Its blend of the traditional and the contemporary is reflected in the five-star Great Eastern Hotel, which opened in 1884, ten years after the station, as a venue for rail passengers. Extended in 1901 and recently refurbished by co-owner Sir Terence Conran, the hotel's magnificent Victorian exterior belies the cutting-edge comfort and hospitality enjoyed within. Liverpool Street is situated at the north-east edge of the City of London, the historic financial district which includes two of London's most famous tall buildings - Tower 42 and 30 St Mary Axe ("The Gherkin") - and also provides a wide range of cultural entertainment. To the east, nearby attractions include Brick Lane, Petticoat Lane, Columbia Road and Old Spitalfields markets, while a northward journey leads to the vibrant nightlife of Hoxton and Shoreditch.
