The village of Longford, situated at the north-west edge of Heathrow, is an ideal base for airline passengers. Surrounded by major roads lined with hotels, Longford has nevertheless retained its charming village character, with some delightful buildings at its heart. Perhaps the most dramatic is Yeomans, a grand, timber-framed house surviving from the 1500s. It looks across the road to the village's oldest pub, the White Horse, another timber-framed structure with 17th Century origins. Next door is the large, thatched Ash Tree Cottage, an 18th Century dwelling and a picture postcard come to life. Other attractive sights include a magnificent half-timbered Quaker Meeting House dating back to 1676 (now privately owned), the 17th Century Weekly House (converted inside into offices), and a building called The Stables, which contains part of an old coaching inn. Also interesting is Spelthorne Farm, a charitable venue which encourages the disabled to work with animals. The farm moved to the village to make way for Heathrow's Terminal Five. For the same reason, the courses of two local rivers were altered. Now, Longford residents are contending not only with aircraft and traffic noise but with threats to the village itself from a proposed third runway.
