Maida Vale is a leafy residential area in west London, much sought after by homebuyers. It took its name from a pub, the Hero of Maida, which opened in Edgware Road in 1809. The pub itself was named after the Battle Of Maida in south Italy three years earlier, in which British forces had defeated Napolean's army. The area is characterised by some striking stucco crescents and handsome red-brick buildings that include Edwardian mansion blocks. Large private gardens, tree-lined avenues and the open spaces of Paddington Recreation Ground all contribute to the pleasing appearance of Maida Vale. In the south is Little Venice, a district where the tranquil landscape surrounding the canals and houseboats is complemented by a variety of chic and vibrant cafés, restaurants, bars, pubs, shops and hotels. The Canalway Cavalcade, taking place every year in May, has become London's premier waterway event. Spectators watch from the newly-restored Rembrandt Gardens, a delightful park overlooking Browning's Pool, where the canals converge. Elsewhere, the Maida Vale Studio, home of John Peel's legendary radio sessions, made great musical history, although it's now threatened with closure by the BBC. Nearby attractions include Regent's Park and London Zoo, Camden Town and Notting Hill.
