Marble Arch, an imposing monument, stands on a traffic island at the centre of a major road junction in central London, separating some of the capital's most famous roads. From here, the retail paradise of Oxford Street leads off to the east towards Bond Street, a centre for luxury shopping, and Tottenham Court Road, whose store windows are filled with all the latest electronic equipment. Park Lane and Bayswater Road, lined by grand hotels, run off Marble Arch to the south and west respectively, past the green acres of Hyde Park. Edgware Road, a great destination for cosmopolitan dining, heads north west from the junction. Marble Arch itself is a dramatic structure, designed by John Nash after the example of the Arch of Constantine in Rome. Made from white marble, it originally stood in The Mall as the gateway to Buckingham Palace, but when Queen Victoria extended the palace in 1851, the Arch was moved to its current position close to the site of the old Tyburn gallows where crowds once watched the public executions of criminals and political prisoners. These days, political agitators are more likely to be found sounding off on a soapbox at the nearby Speaker's Corner.
