Mile End is a distinct area within the Borough of Tower Hamlets in London’s East End, with Bow to its eastern side and beyond that the site of the 2012 Olympics, in whose halo it certainly sits. What is now a fairly central location was of course in past times a country area, a hamlet known to exist on the site in the Middle Ages. Indeed it only became a part of the metropolis in administrative terms as late as 1855. The most glorious moment in the district’s history came during the Peasants’ Rebellion, when Richard II met the rebels there and came to an agreement with them (soon reneged on). In the later Victorian era The Queen’s Hall was built here, its facilities partly cultural and educational (the roots of Queen Mary College) and part leisure resource. Queen Mary College was formed in 1934, and has developed into a significant research-led university, which has a large campus in Mile End. The first V1 ‘doodlebug’ fell on Mile End with horrific consequences, though some good eventually came from the blitz in that bombsites were used to create Mile End Park, an area of importance for the community: it was here Rachel Whiteread showed her fascinating ‘House’ sculpture, sadly soon demolished; and where the innovative Green Bridge now stands.
