Morden is a south-west London suburb bordered by Wimbledon and Merton to the north and Mitcham to the east. This was once a rural village grouped around the hilltop parish church of St Lawrence. The present Grade 1-listed church building survives from 1636 although it was later extended. Today's Morden is largely residential with a busy town centre and a popular market. Its newest landmark is the spectacular Baitul Futuh Mosque, reputedly the biggest mosque in Europe, which has been rated among the world's finest fifty buildings by Spectator magazine. There are numerous green spaces in and around the area. Morden Hall Park, a National Trust property, offers lovely walks through parkland, wetland and meadows. It also contains some preserved watermills in addition to the hall itself, now a hotel. Morden Park, meanwhile, features a smaller historic house dating from the 18th Century, and an ancient burial mound. The park also includes a swimming pool and sporting facilities. On the outskirts of Morden are two nature reserves, Cannon Hill Common and John Innes Park, and Deen City Farm. Visitors might consider a trip to Mitcham to enjoy the Merton Heritage Centre, Wandle Industrial Museum and Canon Leisure Centre.
