Peckham rose to fame in the 1980s as the setting for the acclaimed BBC sitcom, "Only Fools And Horses" - although none of it was actually filmed here. The series reflected a down-at-heel district of south-east London populated by wide boys and villains. Today's reality is rather different, with Peckham recently voted Britain's "most vibrant cultural hotspot". Only two miles from the West End, its regeneration has been funded by the European Union. Peckham now enjoys a prize-winning state-of-the-art library, a renovated town centre and new housing in the north. Future plans include the establishment of a Cross River Tram, connecting Peckham and Brixton to north London. The area's association with the arts focuses on the renowned South London Gallery whose exhibitors have included Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Gilbert & George, and Angel of the North sculptor Antony Gormley is among Peckham's notable residents. Fashionable bars, cafés and restaurants have become part of the everyday scenery, but the neighbourhood history lives on in places such as Manze's Pie and Mash shop and the beautiful Victorian station at Peckham Rye. A Wildlife Garden Centre and park, specialising in local plants, and a golf course are nearby, in East Dulwich.
