Regent's Park is a great favourite with Londoners, having something to offer everyone, young and old, in glorious surroundings. The park, designed in 1811 by royal architect John Nash, has at its heart Queen Mary's Gardens, created a little later and contained within the Inner Circle. Here, the shrubs and flowerbeds are beautifully planted and colour co-ordinated to provide a striking year-round display, while the rose garden scents the air with 400 different varieties. Also in the Gardens are the Open Air Theatre, famous for its Shakespearian productions throughout the summer, and a lake where children love to feed the waterfowl. The local squirrels are equally happy to accept tidbits. In other parts of the park there are children's playgrounds, a bandstand, a big boating lake shared with swans, courts, pitches and tracks for a wide range of sports with a pavilion called The Hub, cafés, restaurants and ice-cream stands, and the world-renowned London Zoo. Opposite the zoo and across Prince Albert Road rises Primrose Hill, which gives splendid views over Westminster and the City. Near Regent's Park is the London Central Mosque, whose dome is a dramatic landmark, and parades of spectacular colonnaded Regency terraces designed by Nash.
