Ruislip is a place where town meets countryside, on the outskirts of north-west London. Once a sleepy farming village, it expanded dramatically in the 1930s as city workers flocked to set up home in outlying rural areas. Today, the attraction continues, with the wild and wonderful scenery of Ruislip Woods delighting residents and visitors alike. This 700-acre National Nature Reserve holds a green flag award for its unspoilt ancient woodland, streams, ponds, wildlife, walks and riding facilities. Adjacent to the woods is Ruislip Lido, a 60-acre lake with a beach, a popular gauge railway, a pub, a playground, an assault course and excellent opportunities for birdwatchers. Elsewhere, Ruislip's history is recalled in the buildings around the Grade II-listed Manor Farm House, whose acreage includes the 13th Century Great Barn, now hosting local events, the 16th Century Little Barn, housing a library, and a mound and moat surviving from a Norman castle. In the High Street, the ancient St Martin's Church contains furniture from the 14th Century. Convenient to the M25, M40, M4, M1 and Heathrow, Ruislip also offers an exhibition of classic and custom cars at the London Motor Museum, a golf course, and a lively arts and entertainment programme.
