South Ruislip is a handy base for visitors to the capital. Situated on the fringes of north-west London, it's close to the A40, which leads directly into Paddington, and it's within easy reach of all the important western motorways -ideal for anyone wishing to explore the neighbouring counties. Heathrow is only eight miles away. Non-drivers, or travellers preferring not to take the car into London, can simply hop on to the tube at South Ruislip station. This is a predominantly residential area characterised by semi-detached houses and large terraces. There's good local shopping and a range of superstores at Victoria Retail Park. The district is well provided with tennis courts and playing fields, and Queensmead Sports Centre caters for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities including badminton, netball, football, basketball, trampoline and table tennis. It also provides a fitness centre, sauna, steam and sun rooms, and a host of children's events. Golfers have access to several nearby courses, and nature-lovers will enjoy a trip to Ruislip Woods which offer walks and horseback rides through 700 acres of ancient woodland, ponds and streams. Also worth a visit is Ruislip Lido, a large lake and beach with a gauge railway.
