Staines is an old Roman settlement on the Thames, just a few miles from Surrey's boundary with west London. Roman artefacts are exhibited at the town's Spelthorne Museum, and its more recent past lives on in the 17th, 18th and 19th Century houses in the local conservation area. Staines has become a thriving commuter town due to its proximity to both Heathrow and the M25, which provides access into London via the M3 and M4. Non-drivers are only 30 minutes by train from Waterloo. Consequently, millions of pounds have recently been invested in Staines, leading to booming property prices. The town has also had an unlikely ambassador in Sacha Baron Cohen, whose character Ali G, a spoof rapper, immortalised the "West Staines Massive". At the heart of Staines is its pedestrianised High Street, which offers a range of shops, pubs and restaurants, and also hosts a large, twice-weekly market. There are also two major shopping centres. The Memorial Gardens, meanwhile, provide lovely walks and views of the river, where regular boating events and an annual regatta take place. Carp fishing in the nearby lakes is a popular activity, and indoor swimming and fitness are enjoyed at the Spelthorne Leisure Centre.
