Situated to the north of Croydon, Thornton Heath is a largely residential area with an array of popular Victorian, Edwardian and 1930s semi-detached houses. Noted for its cosmopolitan character, it has a thriving community of small shops and restaurants as well as a successful leisure centre, and it's only a short bus ride from the major stores and nightlife of Croydon. Thornton Heath has an intriguing history, developing about a mile to the east of the 36-acre heath itself. This common grazing land was, in the 1700s, a favourite haunt of highwaymen. Those convicted of highway robbery were hanged at the gallows which stood at Thornton Heath Pond. The heath no longer exists, having long ago been built over, and until recently, the pond had vanished too. Drained and filled in, the much-loved local landmark became a roundabout - but 50 years later, in 2003, the local council delighted residents by reintroducing a water feature. The nearby Wheatsheaf pub, an 18th Century coaching inn, is reputed to be haunted by a former landlord's daughter who was murdered and flung into the pond. Another familiar feature of Thornton Heath is its 1900 clocktower, sited on an area once called Walker's Green.
