North London's leafy, residential Tufnell Park has many benefits. It provides the visitor with a quiet and attractive place to stay, undisturbed by the commuter traffic which is intentionally directed away from the area via a series of one-way systems: Tufnell Park prides itself on its environmental quality. At the same time, it's only a short distance north of the chaotic excitement of Camden Town with its colourful nightlife, live music venues and famous market, and less than a mile east of Hampstead Heath. The Heath is a wonderfully inviting landscape, alternating between meadow, woodland and heathland, interspersed with ponds, over 800 acres. The winding lanes, charming cottages, historic houses and fascinating shops and galleries of Hampstead village are well worth visiting too. Tufnell Park Road follows the route of an old Roman road, and for centuries this was an agricultural area known for its dairy farms, which supplied milk to much of London. House-building started in the mid-1800s as the city expanded, although the arrival of the railways and, later, major roads left Tufnell Park quite untouched. Today, its residents range from families to professionals and media types lured by the peaceful atmosphere and affordable character homes.
