Situated on the Thames in south-west London, Twickenham enjoys a scenic mix of green land, historic houses and waterside pubs, wharves and boats. Radnor Gardens stretch along the river offering lovely walks through the trees, with provision for fishing and bowls, and Eel Pie Island, reached by private footbridge, is the unlikely setting for some of the Sixties' most significant rock gigs. The triangular Twickenham Green, home to the cricket club, and the wild scenery of Mereway Nature Park complement the 66-acre parklands of Marble Hill House, a beautiful riverside Palladian villa. From here, there are ferry trips to the palatial 17th Century Ham House. Sandycombe Lodge, once owned by painter and poet JMW Turner, is close to Alexander Pope's Grotto, an underground wonderworld which has survived Pope's former villa and garden. Strawberry Hill House is a dramatic castle regarded as Britain's finest example of Georgian Gothic Revival architecture, and 1709's Kneller Hall now houses the Royal Military School of Music. Orleans House art gallery stands in a delightful woodland garden by the river. Other attractions include Twickenham Museum, the Pottery Café, the famous film studios, an abundance of bars and restaurants and, of course, Twickenham Rugby Stadium and Museum.
