Walworth is a built-up, inner-city area of south-east London spread around two important arteries, Walworth Road and Old Kent Road. This part of the capital is widely associated with the cheery, working-class Londoner immortalised in old music-hall songs such as "Knocked 'Em In The Old Kent Road", although there's nothing "Cor blimey, guv" about today's Walworth. This is a thoroughly cosmopolitan district, with people of countless nationalities living side by side in swathes of Sixties housing. Famous old pubs have disappeared or been converted: the Thomas A Becket, with its legendary boxing history, now functions as an estate agency and gallery in the Old Kent Road, where retail superstores are part of the scenery along with numerous multicultural shops and restaurants. East Lane Market, a one-time haunt of Charlie Chaplin, who was born locally, is a hive of activity, its fresh-food stalls loaded with exotic fruit and vegetables. However, Walworth's past lives on in the Cuming Museum. Administered by Southwark Council, the museum was founded with treasures left by the Cuming family, who collected antique objects from around the world, bought at auction. The museum has since added artefacts provided by other collectors, and now focuses on local history.
