The east-London district of Wapping was historically connected with sailing and, then, with docks and warehouses built in the 19th Century. Falling into disrepair after World War II, it was revitalised as part of Docklands in the 1980s. It hit the headlines in 1986 when Rupert Murdock moved in with News International, triggering huge protests as thousands of print workers were made redundant. Wapping - located on the north side of the Thames between Tower Bridge and Shadwell - is now best known for its colourful blend of the old and the contemporary. Wharves have been converted into luxury riverside flats, while flights of time-trodden stone steps lead to the shore, and various ancient pubs, including the Town of Ramsgate and the Captain Kidd, captivate visitors. The aged Prospect of Whitby is famous for its adjacent gibbet - a replica of the gallows that stood locally at the former Execution Dock. Another popular attraction is the Wapping Project, a contemporary arts, performance and restaurant centre set in a one-time hydraulic power station. River cruises are available from Wapping, fitness fans are welcome at the John Orwell Sports Centre, and St Katharine Docks near the Tower of London offer lively shopping and dining.
