West Drayton, a suburb on the western outskirts of London, provides a handy stop-over for visitors travelling in and out of the capital. Just a short distance north of Heathrow, West Drayton is also near the M4 and M25 junction, is within easy reach of the M3 and M40, and has a rail link to Paddington. This was once a small farming settlement grouped round a green. The coming of the Great Western Railway enabled West Drayton to expand its market gardening industry, and with the construction of the Grand Union Canal, it ventured into brick-making too. Today, it's primarily a commuter town although the listed buildings around West Drayton Green, a conservation area, preserve something of the old village atmosphere. Garden City, an attractive housing development, is not so historic but has nevertheless been designated an Area of Special Local Character. Right on the doorstep is Stockley Park, a business centre surrounded by 274 acres of parklands, lakes and almost 200,000 trees and shrubs. The park includes footpaths, bridlepaths and a golf course. The location of a former RAF station and an air traffic control centre, West Drayton is not far from the shops, bars and restaurants of Uxbridge.
