The village of Coningsby is situated in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, eight miles south of Horncastle on the A513 Horncastle to Sleaford road. It is home to one of the RAF's most important airbases, RAF Coningsby. The airbase is important because it houses three squadrons and is also home to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight; a collection of classic planes formed in 1957 to commemorate the Royal Air Force's major battle honour. It comprises a Lancaster, five Spitfires, two Hurricanes and a Dakota; all of which are still flying regularly in displays. The parish church of St Michael is a 15th century church with an impressive tower which overlooks the village. The church has what is believed to be the largest one-handed clock in the world. The clock is over 5 metres in diameter and the face is painted directly onto the wall of the tower. The pendulum is so large that is swings only once every two seconds! The tower itself is also unusual in that it is outside of the main church building; there is an archway under the tower through which a footpath leads. For those interested in two wheeled transport, Coningsby is also home to the Coningsby Moorside Motorcycle Museum.
