Markfield is a village set between the M1 and Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire, There is plenty on offer in Markfield and the surrounding area, such as Ulverscroft Nature Reserve set within part of an ancient forest, or how about Hill Hole Quarry Nature Reserve with stunning landscape and woodland and a water filled quarry. Birdwatchers take a trip to Groby Pond where majestic black swans and other birds swim. Donington Le Heath is a 13th Century Manor House with restored Medieval rooms, and a wealth of exhibits on show, not to mention the monthly re-enactments and demonstrations, or perhaps Kirby Muxloe Castle with a Gatehouse and tower, stands surrounded by a moat hinting of times gone by. Calling all fishermen , Thornton Reservoir is set in 75 acres of farmland and woodland, complete with a fishing lodge, for bird lovers Tropical Birdland surely has it all with it’s tropical bird garden, walk through the aviaries or through woodland, with over 600 birds, a gift shop, or even the possibility of becoming a Keeper for a day what else could be wished for. Perhaps Mallory Park set within a natural amphitheatre home to motorcycle races, and great racing cars. Markfield, worth a visit……..definitely.
