Uppingham is one of only three towns in the tiny rural county of Rutland. It can be found along the A47 between Leicester and Peterborough, about six miles to the south of Rutland's county town of Oakham. Uppingham has always been well known for Uppingham School, the independent seat of learning, founded in 1584. The school claims to have the largest playing fields of any school in the country (a claim contested by Christ's Hospital). The school bought even more fame to the town when it was recently used as a backdrop for parts of a Harry Potter film. The school has its memorial hall off High Street West, which has a magnificent roof and a collection of historical treasures including the school's original charter bearing the royal seal of Queen Elizabeth I. This small market town is wonderfully picturesque, with its stone buildings and myriad of pubs, antique shops, second hand book shops and tea rooms. Market day is on Friday, where stall holders have been coming to trade since the thirteenth century. The names of streets and buildings around the town centre give many clues as to their rich history. For more history you can also visit the nearby Rockingham Castle, built by William the Conqueror.
