Wrea Green is a quiet and charming rural village located in the heart of the rural Fylde in Lancashire and boasts the largest village green in Lancashire. Back in 1683 a local worker was earning 4d per day (that’s about 3p in todays money) and when he died he left the sum of £180 to build a school for Wrea Green. Since then the school has been extended and today it stands as a testament to the generosity of a man who lived over 300 years ago. It wasn’t until 1755 that the Parish Church of St Nicholas was consecrated by the Bishop of Chester, the current church of St Nicholas in the centre of the village was consecrated in 1855. Today Wrea Green is also probably one of the prettiest villages in Fylde and the centrepiece being the village green. Formerly the green with its ponds was used for cattle and horses to graze on but this practice had all but ceased by the middle of the 20th century. Today it is where cricket matches are held in the summer, two of the original ponds being filled in to accommodate the pitch. This small village is well situated for access to the surrounding towns of Kirkham and Lytham whilst Blackpool is around six miles away and Preston an easily accessible ten miles.
