Ashton Keynes is a charming and quintessentially English village near the Wiltshire border with Gloucestershire, about six miles south of Cirencester. The village boast several beautiful houses, many of them made from Cotswold Stone. Straddling the Thames near its source, water has always been part of village life and floods were formally an annual event. Now, after years of gravel extraction in the surrounding areas there are 150 acres of lakes forming the Cotswold Water Park. The Waterpark, as it is often known, is Britains' largest and consists of over 140 lakes covering 40 square miles. Fihermen will have plenty do to and day tickets can be obtained from the Ashton Keynes Angling Club. Angling isn't the only activity to be enjoyed with bird watching, rambling and various water sports also on offer. Back in the village the thirsty traveller might head for the Horse and Jockey, which has long served the village community and passers through. During the war American Servicemen would come to the pub and buy the locally made cider by the enamel bucket load. Nowadays the Horse and Jockey carries a wider range of drinks as does its rival public house, the White Hart.
