This tiny north Wiltshire village was once surrounded only by sleepy farmland but now finds itself just north of the M4, the main arterial route between London and South Wales. As with many small and unspoilt English villages, Grittleton centres around the parish church. St Mary the Virgin was once called All Saints and dates back to at least the Norman period. The church features impressive decorative tiled flooring as well as some wonderful tiled reredos. These, along with the stained glass windows make this a colourful place of worship. Grittleton House, the Victorian manor house, is now a successful independent school. But visitors can still enjoy the magnificent building and the 20 acres of formal and informal gardens as it is available for weddings and special functions. The 17th century stone built Neeld Arms offers comfortable accommodation for those seeking a little more character than is on offer at the nearby Travel Lodge at the Leigh Delamare motorway services. Grittleton is ideally placed for visiting the annual Badminton Horse Trails, the pinnacle of the international 3-Day-Event calendar, which take place nearby. The village is also close to the Castle Combe racing circuit and the stylish Manor House Golf Club.
