The village has been inhabited at least since the Domesday period when it warranted a mention as for its "one cottager and four small holders". Today the village forms part of the Longleat estate and is owned by the Marquess of Bath. Woodhouse Castle once stood on the parish boundary but the building was sacked in the Civil War and was never rebuilt. The remains can still be seen today on the road to Frome. The parish church, St John The Baptist, dates back to the 12th century although it has been rebuilt twice. Only parts of the tower are from the middle ages with alterations taking place in 1783 and again in 1843 when the church was enlarged. The village has another place of worship, the Old Meeting House, a congregational chapel. The chapel was built by the Scotsmen employed by Sir John Thynne to help build Longleat House. It is claimed to be the oldest Free Church in England still in use for worship. The village pub is called the The Bath Arms and it's also a hotel and restaurant. The world famous Lions of Longleat are just around the corner so expect its 14 rooms to be in demand.
