The village of Kingsdown in Wiltshire is to be found just south of the A4 Bath Road, adjacent to the junction with the A365 Devizes Road, near to the village of Box. Kingsdown sits close to the westernmost border of Wiltshire and it is just a five-mile drive along the A4 to the historic city of Bath. Although Kingsdown is just a tiny hamlet, it does have its own golf course. Kingsdown Golf Club was first established in 1880, making it only the second West Country course. The course suffered greatly during the Great War and lost much of its land to agriculture, taking it down to a thirteen-hole course. It was not until 1967 that the course regained its full eighteen-hole status. The nearby village of Box is nowadays most famous for the Box Railway Tunnel, which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The history of this area goes back much further, however, at least to Roman times.
