Membury lies along the M4 in Wiltshire, not far from Swindon, between junctions 14 and 15. It is the site of the Membury Services, which provides rest and refreshment facilities for travellers, including the Days Inn motel for those in need of overnight accommodation. Membury is also the site of RAF Membury and USAF Membury. The airfield was built by the USAF in 1942 and used by the RAF until it was closed in 1946. Many of the wartime buildings remain and RAF Membury was used in the 1970s for the filming of Doctor Who episodes for the series of 'The Daemons' (1971) and 'Planet of the Spiders' (1974). The Campbell Aircraft Company's hangar was featured in 'The Daemons' and they built the single-seater Gyrocopter used in 'Planet of the Spiders'. Several other locations within a five-mile radius were used in the filming of 'The Daemons', including The Green, Crooked Corner, St Michael's Church, Four Barrows and Ramsbury Airfield. Clearly the area has a lot to offer fans of classic Doctor Who, or those who are interested in the airfields of World War II. It is, however, also a convenient place to stay for those visiting the nearby town of Swindon who does not want to stay in the town itself.
