Steeple Ashton is a beautiful village positioned in the county of Wiltshire, and is home to just under a thousand people. It has an intriguing history which dates back many centuries, from a small agricultural settlement it saw the farming of sheep, and the building of Mills here ensuring its reputation as a "Wool Town". 1503 was the year which saw a fire sweep through the village damaging many houses and buildings, resulting in a large building project, of which many remain. The streets are lined with attractive half timbered houses, and white washed cottages, many of which date back to the 16th and 17th Centuries. This busy, yet pretty village has shops for that everyday purchase in the High Street which leads to the Village Green and a Market Cross, close by will reveal the 18th Century Lock Up which no longer plays host to villains, instead keeps safe the Lawnmower used to trim the Green. There is a fabulous pub which continues to offer a warm welcome, and an impressive 15th Century church dedicated to St Mary whose pinnacled tower graces the skyline, it once boasted a spire although that was struck by lightning, not once but twice. Rich countryside, and woodland envelopes the village which continues to attract walkers and artists alike to this award winning location 4 miles or so from Trowbridge.
