Bethersden is an ideal spot to relax amid the rolling fields and woodlands of Kent. It's a peaceful, pleasing village with shops, pubs and weatherboarded houses that are vividly characteristic of the Weald. Bethersden, near Tenterden and the larger town of Ashford, is within comfortable driving distance of many famous attractions: stately homes, gardens, castles, museums, steam trains, wildlife sanctuaries, historic cities and seaside resorts. For many, though, the great appeal of Bethersden is simply to escape, to explore the nearby villages of Pluckley, Smarden and Wissenden, and to enjoy walking the footpaths - or cycling - through acres of beautiful countryside. Bethersden was not always so quiet. At one time it quarried mock marble, a local stone that was polished and sold all over the county. Rochester and Canterbury cathedrals are among buildings showing off "Bethersden marble". The village was then at the centre of the woollen trade, and locals laid blocks of the famous fake marble across fields so the pack horses could carry their wares to market without sinking into the clay. Bethersden was also home to Cavalier poet Richard Lovelace who, during a jail sentence, coined the oft-quoted line that "stone walls do not a prison make".
