Bexley is located to the west of Dartford, where Kent meets Greater London, and so visitors really can make the best of both worlds. It's ideally placed for sightseeing and shopping trips to the capital and for excursions into the heart of the Kent countryside. The name Bexley means a "clearing in a box wood" and, in the 1800s, this now largely urban area was covered by open farmland with scattered tiny settlements. The original Bexley village dates back to the 5th Century at least. It began to grow with the arrival of the railway in 1866, and development continued throughout the next century. Some of the older buildings - the almshouses, St Mary's Church and the 18th Century Grade II-listed High Street House - can still be seen today. However, Bexley's biggest historical attraction is Hall Place, a splendid Grade I-listed 16th Century Tudor manor house offering free admission to its rooms and exhibitions. It's set in glorious, award-winning gardens, also open to the public. Another fascinating destination is the Gothic Bath House, a cold-plunge bathing facility built beside the River Cray in or around 1766. Situated in a private garden, it may be viewed by appointment with the landowner.
