Biggin Hill is home to London Biggin Hill Airport which uses much of the land formerly used by RAF Biggin Hill Aerodrome, best known for its role during the Battle of Britain when it served as one of the principal fighter bases. The old "west camp" of the airport is now owned by Bernie Ecclestone. A small section remains in the care of the RAF. Replicas of a Hawker Hurricane and a Spitfire are on display and the chapel is open to the public. The old "south camp" is now occupied by the Biggin Hill Business Park, Airport Industrial Estate and various private flying clubs. The Biggin Hill International Air Fair takes place in June every year. There is a golf club in Jail Lane as well as The Old Jail pub. Nearby is the village of Downe where Charles Darwin lived with his family at Down House, now a museum. Down House and the surrounding area has been nominated by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to become a World Heritage site. Squerryes Court, a 17th century manor house, is located in the nearby village of Westerham where Winston’s Churchill’s house, Chartwell, is also to be found.
