Capel-le-Ferne, whose name derives from the phrase "Chapel in the Ferns", is situated near Folkestone, Kent. Perched on top of the White cliffs of Dover, its foremost attraction is the Battle of Britain Memorial, opened by the Queen Mother in 1993. It is at the site of a gun battery, 400 feet above the Channel, from which 16-inch guns shelled occupied France. There are three footpaths down to the beach. One by the side of the Cliff Top Café, another by the Valiant Sailor pub at the opposite end of the village at the top of Dover Hill, and one from the caravan site opposite the Royal Oak pub. Towards Folkestone, heading for the East Cliff area, there is a road leading down to the Warren which is at the foot of the cliffs. The Warren is a very interesting area for flora and fauna and good for walking. Nearby is Samphire Hoe, an area containing nearly five million cubic metres of chalk marl excavated from the channel tunnel and surrounded on the seaward side by a concrete promenade. It was opened to the public in 1997 and has areas for picnicking and is popular for fishing and walking.
