Charing is a small village and civil parish in the Ashford District of Kent. It includes the settlement of Charing Heath and is situated at the foot of the North Downs. The Pilgrims Way crosses the village and there are a number of old manors located around the vicinity, such as Newlands (now a horse stud) and Pett Place. Its most famous building is the Archbishop's Palace, which lies by the church of St Peter and St Paul, and was once the property of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The palace was an important building in the diocese of Canterbury, and counted amongst its guests King Henry VIII. It has been a farmhouse for the last 300 years. The church is rumoured to contain the stone on which John the Baptist was beheaded. The village has a number of traditional shops and a couple of restaurants and pubs including The Bowl Inn on Egghill Road and The Red Lion at Charing Heath. The A20 Maidstone-Ashford road cuts through, separating the main village from a cluster of houses and the railway station on its southern side where there is a health club called The Green, on the road to the neighbouring village of Pluckley.
