Elham is an attractive village set within the heart of the Elham Valley, in the county of Kent, home to just over fifteen hundred people. It has a rich history which dates back to the Bronze Age Settlers who first came here, today's visitor can still discover the past with the delightful 13th Century church dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, and the Square which saw a thriving Market in Medieval times. Although there is no longer a weekly market, there is still a Farmers Market which takes place every other Sunday. A stroll through the village will reveal pretty 16th and 17th Century houses, impressive black and white timber framed buildings a legacy from Tudor times, one of which today is home to a restaurant, together with a 16th Century Inn offering a warm welcome. Walkers are attracted here as it's surrounded by the picturesque North Downs countryside, that was once used to grow the Flax needed for Rope Making which the village was renowned for; there is a shop for that essential purchase, and as it sits just 9 miles or so from the Cathedral city of Canterbury it is perfectly placed for a short visit, or for those who wish to stay a while longer there is a delightful choice of B&B's on offer.
