Goudhurst is located in the gorgeous surroundings of the High Weald, complete with woodlands, rolling hills, hop gardens and oast houses, near the border with East Sussex. The village, which wanders up the side of a hill, has changed little over the years, with a picturesque duck pond and some lovely ancient houses and cottages together creating a timeless Kentish charm. There are breathtaking views over the countryside from St Mary's historic hilltop church. On a clear day, reportedly, it's possible to see London's Canary Wharf Tower some 40 miles away. Goudhurst, once a busy iron-mining community and a part of the broadcloth-manufacturing industry along with Cranbrook, Biddenden and Hawkhurst, is a much quieter place today. It has only a few small shops, although it's just six miles from the nearest town of Cranbrook. The grandest building in Goudhurst is Finchcocks, a Grade 1-listed Baroque manor house set among woods and hop gardens, which houses a musical museum and a popular cellar restaurant. The neighbouring Bedgebury Pinetum contains the most magnificent collection of conifers in the world, with more than 10,000 trees and shrubs, and activities here include walking, mountain biking, horse riding, cycling, nature trails, orienteering and adventure play.
