Herne Bay is showing a bright new face to visitors after a series of improvements to the sea front. Located on the north coast of Kent between Whitstable and Margate, its promenade now features colourful gardens, a refurbished bandstand and café bar, a Victorian water fountain, a long pier, the Neptune's Arm sea-defence jetty, and an eighty-feet, free-standing clock tower, thought to be the world's first. Off-shore sights include a wind farm and sea forts remaining from the Second World War, while at the clifftop, the 12th Century Reculver Towers - surviving from an ancient church - look out over the town. Surrounding the towers is a country park containing other historic relics. Herne Bay's two-mile shingle beach, complete with huts, is a huge attraction, and the setting for activities including fishing and boating, with seal-watching yacht trips available from the jetty. As well as traditional seaside entertainment such as amusement arcades, Herne Bay also has a cinema, a swimming pool, a sports centre, a variety of pubs, clubs and theatres, regular carnivals, concerts and funfairs, and an annual ten-day family festival. Other attractions include an 18th Century windmill and Herne Bay Memorial Park, containing a pond and sports facilities.
