Visitors to Minster - several miles from the coast - might be surprised to learn that it was once a bustling and important port. Centuries of sand and shingle deposition eventually closed up estuaries, rivers and the Wantsum Channel, which separated the Isle of Thanet from mainland Kent. Minster farmers now cultivate crops in fields where the old harbour used to be. This picturesque village is only five or six miles from Thanet's traditional seaside resorts of Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs, and it's an ideal base for exploring the idyllic inland scenery of Kent. Outdoor enthusiasts are assured of lovely walks in the countryside surrounding Minster, and the Viking Coastal Trail cycle route is clearly signposted. The village's most famous attraction is Minster Abbey, a nunnery originally founded as a monastery in 670 AD. It's among the oldest occupied buildings in England. Above the abbey, on a hilltop, is the site of a Roman villa, which archaeologists began excavating in 1996. Minster's grand St Mary's Church, built from stone and flint, is a striking and historic landmark. Welcoming, oak-beamed pubs and the 17th Century building housing Morton's Fork hotel and restaurant all add to the timeless character of the village.
