Sidcup is a suburban town in the London Borough of Bexley, located 11 miles from Charing Cross. Sidcup originated as a tiny hamlet on the road from London to Maidstone and its earliest recorded use was 1254. The name is thought to be derived from Cetecopp meaning 'seat shaped or flat topped hill'. Much of Sidcup is typical 1930s suburbia but it retains several parks and open spaces, indicating the great estates and large homes which once stood in the area. A number of these houses remain and include Frognal House which is now used for sheltered accommodation, Lamorbey House now used by the Rose Bruford Drama College, Sidcup Place, now a Brewer’s Fayre pub and "The Hollies", once a children’s home but now converted for residential use. The town contains a major hospital and two performing arts colleges, the aforementioned Rose Bruford College, and the Bird College of Dance, Music & Theatre Performance. The town centre has a mix of high street stores and independent shops, and several pubs including The Metro Bar by the station and The Hogshead on the High Street. The town is served by several London Bus routes and Albany Park and Sidcup railway stations on the line to Charing Cross.
