Welling is a suburban town within the London Borough of Bexley. It is situated between Shooter's Hill and Bexleyheath, 10.5 miles from Charing Cross. Much of the history of this area is linked to the manor of Danson. A magnificent Palladian villa, built in the late 1760s, survives in the middle of Danson Park, and was recently fully restored by English Heritage. Welling is predominantly a residential suburb and commuter town, with an abundance of 1930s housing. It has its own football ground, home to Welling United F.C. Welling has a range of ethnic restaurants and take-aways, and various independent shops along Welling High Street (which forms a section of the ancient Watling Street), Upper Wickham Lane, and Bellegrove Road. Local landmark café, The Koffi Pot, dates from 1930s. The former Foster's School in Upper Wickham Lane is a Grade II listed building, now converted to residential use. North of here is an ancient church, now used by a Greek Orthodox congregation. A large Russian gun is located at Welling corner. The weapon is of a type used during the Crimean War, on loan from the Royal Artillery Museum in Woolwich as a reminder of Welling's early association with the Woolwich Arsenal.
