Thatched cottages, medieval hall houses and handsome Georgian buildings combine to give Wingham a unique, traditional beauty that can't fail to captivate the visitor. The village contains around sixty houses built before 1760, with many dating back to the 1400s or earlier. Located on the Roman road from Richborough, between the majestic cathedral city of Canterbury and the delightful Cinque Port of Sandwich, Wingham stretches out along a tree-lined high street dominated by the tall green spire of St Mary's Church. Inside the church, some of the arches survive from 1200. Only half a mile outside the village is Wingham Wildlife Park, which is open seven days a week. In addition to its aviaries, ponds and animal enclosures, it includes a Pet Village, a picnic and venture play area and an animal hospital. Wingham's second big attraction is the nearby Goodnestone Park Gardens. The 14-acre gardens - regularly enjoyed by Jane Austen - are generally considered to be among the finest in the South East. The Walled Garden incorporates three enclosures, for roses, herbaceous borders and fruits and vegetables. There's also a woodland walk (overlooking the village cricket ground), an arboretum and gravel garden, and a marvellous array of ancient trees.
