Bromyard, situated between the two cathedral cities of Hereford & Worcester, is a thriving community, with a population in the region of 3500. It is a delightful market town, linked to Ledbury by the Hop Trail along the Frome Valley. Hop growing is a speciality of East Herefordshire, and the Bromyard Heritage Centre, housed in the 18th century stable block of a former rectory is host to an exhibition of 'Herefordshire hops and traditions'. The hop-harvesting season is during September, when the 'bine' are cut at 3ft above ground and then, after sorting, taken to the oast houses or kilns to dry the hop cones. The traditional shaped oast houses are a familiar sight in the Herefordshire landscape although some are now converted into desirable and unusual dwellings. Bromyard also features a Public Art Trail (free leaflet available from the Tourist Information Centre). The trail comprises of three specially commissioned works of art; Spheres of Play, Resting Sheep and Time Tower. Also included is the Millennium Clock, which was the brainchild of local art gallery owner and artist Michael Oxenham.
