An historic medieval market town and wool market of note, Alresford, on the River Itchen, was one of the Bishop of Winchester’s six new towns dating from pre-Norman Conquest times and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Devastated by fires, it is now a pretty pastel-hued Georgian town of 4,500 inhabitants with its Bishop de Lucy 13th century medieval street layout intact. It is famed for its attractive architecture, tree-lined Broad Street one of Hampshire’s more beautiful streets and for its riverside walks, Old Arlesford Pond, Fulling Mill, the Alre and Millenium Trails with illustrated boards on footpaths around the town. A commuter town with light industry businesses, antique and art galleries, it remarkably boasts, for its size, two hotels, eight restaurants, two tearooms, five pubs and churches as well as a skateboard park, golf course, bowling, tennis, football and other sports and societies. There is also the Itchen Valley brewery, the weekly-published Alresford Advertser, WI market and library. Nearby is the world-famous Watercress Line, a heritage steam railway line travelling ten miles from Alresford to Alton, Hinton Ampner’s 12 acre shrub gardens, Northington Grange, a magnificent neoclassical romantic ruin and film location for Eugene Onegin and the 100 year old Alresford Show at Tichborne Park, in September
