Hamble is a small village in Hampshire just outside of Southampton on the South coast. A popular location throughout its history with evidence of Stone Age man and more recently the Romans who all left traces of their residence. With fresh water, fertile soil and forests close by it is easy to understand why the location was first used as a settlement, St Andrews church can trace its roots back to Norman times despite being rebuilt in the 15th century, whilst the 16th century saw Hamble castle built close to the Common with traces of it still evident today at low tide. It is no wonder then that being so close to the sea that the village dabbled with piracy, local history shows that in 1560 a local boatman was hired to take some sailors back to their ship, on the way though they decided to board and take another ship driving the crew overboard, the boatman escaped and the pirates went ashore at Arundel. Today Hamble still enjoys its association with the sea, the local sailing club was first established here in 1925 and is as popular today as it ever was, in the older part of the village there are several pubs and restaurants and at last count three sailing clubs. The village of Hamble though also has its links with the aviation industry and 1922 saw the first waterplane being housed here, during the 1930’s British Marine Aircraft opened a factory here but the last plane to fly out of Hamble was in 1998.
