New Alresford is an attractive small market town in the heart of Hampshire 8 miles (12km) east of Winchester. It`s clear chalk streams have attracted people for millennia, the river Arle - from the Old English Alres = Alder [Tree] which gives the town it`s name - is joined by the Candover and Tichborne streams the three forming the River Itchen that flows through Winchester and on to Southampton. There are three main streets Broad, West and East lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings and the street layout is much the same as is was lied out by Godfrey de Lucy, Bishop of Winchester in around 1200. It was Godfrey`s predecessor, Henri de Bois, who had the streams dammed to form the "Old Alresforf Pond" to supply him with fish for his palace at nearby Bishops Sutton. By 1294 the town had a thriving market and was made a borough, the town had periods of prosperity and slump and suffered badly in the plague of 1479. The town also seems to have it`s fair share of fires, in the 12th, 15th, 17th (four in that century) and the 18th centuries; the fire of 1644 was started by retreating Royalists fleeing from their defeat at the Battle of Cheriton (just to the south west of the town), but the rebuilding has not significantly altered the town`s layout. The church of St.John the Baptist was substantially rebuilt in 1898 using the design of the 1689 church. The Lime Tree lined Broad street is one of the best streets in Hampshire and there are number of specialist shops amongst which to browse; a leisurely walk along the river, or across the weir to Old Alresford past the famous Watercress beds and back past the Old Pond to see the the Wildfowl these are just some of the joys to be had in this lovely Hampshire town.
