Nestling against the side of the New Forest is the village of Plaitford which today is in the County of Hampshire, this has not always been the case though as for a time it was in Wiltshire(until around 1895). An area which is rich in history tracing its roots back to Stone Age times, although the forest was never used for occupation around the periphery is evidence of Stone Age man and with Roman archaeology still found today in the area. Today the New Forest is some 67,000 acres, managed by the Forestry Commission and is a huge attraction for visitors throughout the year. Plaitford is around 5 miles off Junction 2 of the motorway and is therefore easily accessible for the provincial centres of the South Coast, Winchester, Basingstoke and Southampton all within easy access. The original village of Plaitford lay to the north of the River Blackwater, the church of St Peter lies close to the border with Wiltshire and dates back to the 13th century whilst some of the original village properties date back to the 17th and18th century. However there is the Shoe Inn and if you find yourself in the area then a trip here will be rewarded with some excellent architecture dating back to around 1420, on a cold and wet day who can possibly resist enjoying spending time in front of a roaring fire with friends and a few drinks!
