Waterlooville is to be found in Hampshire and research shows that the town did not exist before 1815, before then it was part of the Forest of Bere, and today the Queens Inclosure is one of the last remnants of the forest which was planted to provide timber for naval ships in the 19th century. After 1810 the Forest of Bere was sold for building plots and by 1815 there were just 5 properties, one of these was an inn called the Heroes of Waterloo, so called after the battle fought by Wellington, or it could be that it was called Waterloo because Wellington’s soldiers rested here on their return journey from Waterloo whilst there is some confusion as to the derivation of the name one thing is certain it did later change its name to Waterlooville to distinguish it from another town called Waterloo. From these fairly recent beginnings the town has grown into what it is today, it has its weekly markets on London Road, a recent innovation for the town is its an annual Music Festival at St Georges Church, held in June and which is growing in stature with each year, the bypass and the M27 help with commuting and with its new business park encouraging the growth of local industry Waterlooville may be a relatively new town but its popularity remains.
