Nestling within the Meon Valley in Hampshire is the market town of Wickham tracing its history back to the Roman Period when it is likely that they built one of the original bridges over the River Meon. The town is around three miles north of Fareham and is notable for the large formal square that dominates the town centre. Wickham though has connections with Winchester College and New College, Oxford, this is attributable to William of Wykeham, born in the late 14th century be went on to become incredibly wealthy and it was his wealth that established these educational centres. If you take the time to stroll around Wickham today you will see a number of listed buildings, some dating back to the 15th century, much of it though from the 19th century. No matter where you find yourself though you will inexorably be drawn back to The Square with its mix of attractive Georgian houses, shops and bars. For those who appreciate the rural idyll that is Hampshire then with its miles of footpaths, bridleways and cycle tracks there is an appeal for almost everyone who visits the town of Wickham.
