Burnham-on-Crouch is a historic town situated on the banks of the River Crouch in the Dengie 100 peninsula in Essex marshland. Virtually the whole of the coast is classified as an area of special scientific interest boasting flora and birdlife found in few other places in the UK. Best known as a yachting centre hosting the internationally famous ' Burnham Week' it also boasts many other attractions as diverse as bronze age burial mounds in The Creeksea Cliffs area to a working steam railway museum. Burnham is home to the oldest marina in England, housing a 1930's Yacht Club, just one of the 117 listed buildings in the town. On the attractive High Street are the listed Clock Tower and many other old cottages and shops. Creeksea Place is a Tudor country mansion, now used as a conference centre. The renovated Rio Cinema dates from the 1930s and is shows all the latest films. Burnham-on-Crouch & District Museum has exhibits about the Dengie 100 area, and Mangapps Railway Museum on Southminster Road, is a large working museum with trains, carriages, buildings memorabilia, rides and steam days. There are numerous events going on in the town including Burnham Carnival Week, held annually on the last Saturday in September, and ending with a torchlight procession. Burnham hosts the month long RiverFest in June culminating in two days of live open air music, and The Burnham Town Show is a series of events held annually over the August Bank Holiday weekend which starts Burnham Week – ‘the best sailing week on the East Coast’. The Crouch estuary is home to many seals who are to be seen basking on the sandbanks. Regular boat trips will take you to see the seals. There is a now defunct nuclear power station at nearby Bradwell-on-Sea that has a visitor centre and nature trail.
