Canvey Island is an island in the River Thames estuary off the coast of Essex. It was originally made up of five separate islands, these being mainly marshlands. Sheep farming became the major industry for many years. Before the building of sea defences the shepherds and sheep were the only inhabitants of the island. The Dutch came to build the sea defences in the 17th century and left two cottages on the island as a legacy. Dutch Cottage Museum is in one of the original cottages and houses a display on local history. The oldest pub on the island is the Lobster Smack Inn by the sea wall which claims a licence dating from the time of Elizabeth I. Also by the sea wall, The Monico pub was once a hotel with a casino when Canvey was a popular holiday destination. Other attractions include the Canvey Miniature Railway and the Castle Point Transport Museum. The Heritage Centre is housed in the former St. Katherine's Church. It now contains an art and craft centre with a small folk museum. The Garden of Remembrance was created in 2003 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the floods when 58 people died. The western end of the Island is industrial with gas and oil terminals, yet has an amazing diversity of wildlife.
