Castle Hedingham is a small village in north-east Essex. It developed around Hedingham Castle, the ancestral seat of the de Veres, Earls of Oxford. Its main attractions are the well-preserved Norman castle and the Colne Valley Railway. Hedgingham Castle dates from shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The link between the village buildings and the castle is often apparent, with the de Vere's main emblem - a star, or mullet - being carved into several. The castle and estate survive in a very good state of preservation and are now owned by the Lindsay family, descendants of the de Veres, and are open to the public The C12th parish church of St. Nicholas has remained remarkably intact and features three external Norman doors. There are also a number of fine brick houses, mostly dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, most notably the old vicarage and the mansion at the castle, built by the Ashurst family around 1720. The Colne Valley Railway is a heritage railway consisting of a mile-long running line, restored station buildings, signal boxes and bridges, plus a large collection of operational vintage steam and diesel engines, and carriages. It is open to the public from March until December.
